There is a belief among certain disillusioned office worker circles that if you stick it out long enough at a job and refuse to progress or “grow” from your position, you will eventually be put out of your misery and finally get laid off or fired.
Alas, as George Costanza taught us in the eighth season of Seinfeld with the episode “Millennium,” the harder you try to get fired, the harder it is to get fired. So how can you escape your odious profession if being mediocre or even terrible at your job won’t get them to give you your God-given right of unemployment? You take life by the balls and quit. You just walk out the door and never come back.
