“It’s Not Like They’re Methamphetamines”: Justifying Your Drug Habit As A Coping Mechanism

When you’re working more than eight hours a day, as many Midtown office workers are wont to do, you can start to go a bit batty. What helps with battiness? Lots and lots of available drugs (so you see, there’s a reason Patrick Bateman is the emblem of Midtown misery).

The more drugs you start to use to numb the pain of working, the more you start to justify to/compliment yourself that at least you haven’t started using anything truly damaging, like methamphetamines. But eventually, you start to lose interest in all the healthy drugs (cocaine, heroin, etc.) and suddenly methamphetamines look real appealing.
